What's special of this expedition?
Your specialist guide, Lex Hes is a legend around Southern Africa with a track record of superlative safaris to his credit. In 1976 he joined Londolozi, working as a guide and a movie cameraman. During the next 10 years he accumulated enough material for his highly acclaimed book - “The Leopards of Londolozi”. Lex has traveled extensively throughout Africa and has made study trips to the Sub-Antarctic islands. He now lives to the West of the Kruger National Park and spends his time photographing wildlife, writing wildlife orientated books and leading safaris. His latest book “The Complete Book of Southern Africa Mammals” is superb and is destined to become the benchmark book on mammals in the region.
As
much time as possible will be spent looking specifically for Leopards and then
spending time with these beautiful animals.
We will also spend time with the other wildlife that occurs in these areas.
Lex
will also be giving a slide presentation and lecture on the story of the
Leopards of Londolozi and the interesting new discoveries that were made during
his study.

|
Londolozi Private Game Reserve is set in the game-rich Sabi Sand Reserve and is famous for its leopard sightings. Londolozi
Bateleur Camp
is built in a thickly forested river environment and
offers luxurious accommodation in 8 chalets and 4 suites with wooden decks
and a plunge pool. Each
suite, decorated with hand-painted African fabrics, has an en suite
bathroom with a stone-laid outdoor shower and an enormous bath that offers
picturesque views of the surrounding bush.
There is a viewing deck above the Sand River and a sunken outdoor
“boma” where Pan-African cuisine is served. |

Camp (flying via Pietersburg and Maun to clear customs), where
accommodation has been reserved for three nights. Duration of charter flight:
Skukuza / Pietersburg - 35 minutes (times
exclude an approximate 30 minute stopover in Pietersburg and Maun) |
| Mombo Camp
and Little Mombo
(Botswana)
Activities at Mombo include morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers. The game viewing in the area is excellent, and guests could see Lion, Leopard, large herds of Buffalo, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Elephant, Hyena, Giraffe, Wildebeest and Zebra. Access into this area is only by aircraft. |
Mombo Camp and Little Mombo are situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief’s Island, and are within the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. The camp offers abundant big game, arguably the best in Botswana. The highlight here is the concentrations of plains game and all the predators – including the big cats! Leopard sightings are particularly good. Mombo
Camp and Little Mombo have been completely rebuilt and the new camps opened
in June 2000 on a new site 800m away from the old site. Mombo is built under
the shade of some large shady trees and overlooks a wonderful floodplain
that teems with game. Both camps jointly accommodate a total of 24 guests,
but they are divided into two smaller camps – a 6 bedded and an 18 bedded. Both
camps are raised off the ground. The guest’s rooms and the walkways that
connect the rooms to the living areas, are up to 2m off the ground, allowing
game to wander freely through the camp – but at the same time allowing for
guest safety. Facilities at Mombo Camp and Little Mombo include 9 and 3
large guest rooms respectively. These are superbly furnished, large luxury
tents. All rooms are built in the same style.
The canvas rooms are spacious and well appointed and have en-suite
facilities under canvas and an additional outdoor shower for those who enjoy
a shower under the stars. The dining room, pub and living area overlook the
open plain in front of the camp and there is a plunge pool for relaxing in
the heat of the day. |

Kasane and Victoria Falls Airports to clear customs), followed by a 10- minute road transfer from the airstrip to Ruckomechi Camp where
accommodation has been reserved for two nights. Duration of light aircraft flights:
Mombo / Kasane - 1 hour, 30 minutes (times exclude an approximate 30-minute stopover in Kasane and Victoria
Falls) |
| Ruckomechi
Ruckomechi offers diverse game activities, including game drives in 4x4 vehicles, boats, canoes, and fishing. Daily game walks are available with an armed guide. |
Ruckomechi is situated on the western boundary of the Mana Pools National Park. It is situated in a large grove of Acacia and Mahogany trees overlooking the Zambezi River with a superb view of the mountains of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. The camp sleeps a maximum of 20 guests in 10 thatched chalets. Facilities are en-suite and include a shower, toilet and basin. There is one honeymoon suite overlooking the Zambezi River. One of the camp’s better used facilities is an outside “bath with a view”. The central dining, pub and lounge area is under cool thatch, on the river’s edge, facing the escarpment. The
predators including Lion, Wild Dog, Leopard, and Cheetah, are often
sighted, and large concentrations of Buffalo can be found along the
river’s edges. Kudu, Zebra, Impala and Waterbuck can be seen on the
surrounding plains, and Elephant take advantage of the plentiful Albida
trees in the area. Bird watching tends to be good, with the river
attracting large numbers of waterfowl. |
