Extremely exciting Wildlife Expedition in Southern Africa for multi-discipline scientists and students.

What's special of this expedition?

This is a very specialized 9-day safari, led by a fantastic and experienced walking guide. This safari is for guests who enjoy the thrill of being away from a vehicle, tracking many of Africa's large, furry (and occasionally dangerous) game. Brian Worsley is the guide and he explores the exclusive areas with Hwange, Matusadona and Mana Pools National Parks on this 9-day safari.

These are some of Africa's finest walking areas and Brian has been guiding these areas for the past 16 years and is licensed to carry firearms within the Parks for guest's safety.

On this safari, the emphasis is to track and stalk big game on foot in order to learn the finer aspects of tracking animals and identifying their spoor as well as learning to read the “bush newspaper” - interpreting the signs and sounds of all that is going on around you.

The Expedition Operator:

Itinerary:

Day 1  - Day 3 Arrival at Victoria Falls Airport. Transfer to Makalolo

Upon arrival, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by light aircraft to the Makalolo airstrip followed by a road transfer from the airstrip to Little Makalolo Camp where accommodation has been reserved for three nights.

LITTLE MAKALOLO

Your time at Little Makalolo will be spent primarily on foot or in an open 4 x 4 vehicle, traveling to the areas of most interest, which may include some of the permanent water points in the area or exploring some of the diversity of woodland and the resulting diversity of animal and bird species.

Makalolo is one of the best areas for predators, Buffalo and Elephant, all featuring regularly in the experience.

Little Makalolo is a comfortable five-roomed tented camp in the heart of Hwange National Park, in one of its best game viewing areas.  Little Makalolo is one of the few camps located within the park, and offers privacy for guests who enjoy small camps and a sense of remoteness. The comfortable tented rooms each have en-suite facilities, including a flush toilet, and shower with hot and cold running water - as well as an outdoor shower under the stars!  The main living area is under canvas and houses the dining room, lounge and pub, and there is a small plunge pool. The camp overlooks a small waterhole and there is a tree house hide where guests can enjoy game viewing during the “siesta” hours. The area is ecologically diverse, ensuring a varied food “pantry”, which feeds great numbers of animals year round.

Day 4 - Day 6 After the morning game activity and brunch you depart Little Makalolo Camp and transfer by road to the airstrip for Matusadona.

Upon arrival at the airstrip, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by light aircraft to the Matusadona airstrip followed by a road and boat transfer from the airstrip to Matusadona Water Wilderness Camp where accommodation has been reserved for three nights.

MATUSADONA WATER WILDERNESS CAMP

Your time in this area will again be spent mostly on foot, with the options of boats and canoes always available.

This area provides a wonderful walking experience with ancient riverbeds, open woodland and grassland aswell as “Jesse bush” thickets to give shelter to the Rhino.
We’ll spend time attempting to locate the feisty Black Rhino on foot and learning more about these enigmatic creatures. Encounters on foot with Lion, Elephant and Buffalo are also a distinct possibility and learning the correct behaviour around dangerous animals without taking chances will become a highlight of the experience.

Boating, canoeing, game drives in 4x4 vehicles and walking with a licensed guide, gives guests the complete wildlife experience of the area.

Matusadona Water Wilderness is a floating safari camp situated just off the shoreline of Lake Kariba, within Matusadona National Park in northern Zimbabwe. The camp consists of unique floating chalets, moored in a secluded bay. Accommodation is in twin bedded rooms each with en-suite flush toilet and shower. Each of the chalets has its own cool verandah with a superb view of the park. Game is often seen from the rooms. The mother craft houses the central bar, lounge and dining area. Access between the chalets and the main area is by pontoon. Game viewing is excellent in this area, where the fluctuating lake levels have resulted in a grassland around the lake shore, which attracts large herds of antelope, Elephant, Buffalo and a host of predators. Black Rhino are found in the forested areas.

overnight at MATUSADONA WATER WILDERNESS CAMP  Inclusive of all meals, game activities, laundry (takes 2 days) and drinks (except imported premium brands)
Day 7 -  Day 8 After the morning game activity and brunch you depart Matusadona Water Wilderness Camp and transfer by road and boat to the airstrip for RUCKOMECHI . Upon arrival at the airstrip, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by light aircraft to the Mana Pools airstrip followed by a road transfer from the airstrip to Ruckomechi Camp where accommodation has been reserved for two nights.
RUCKOMECHI CAMP

Ruckomechi offers diverse game activities, including game drives in 4x4 vehicles, boats, canoes, and fishing. Daily game walks are available with an armed  guide.

Our foot safaris in this area will concentrate on the riverine and grassland  habitats to be found along the Zambezi River. These are particularly productive and should give us ample opportunity to study Elephant, Lion and a host of other smaller species of animal as well as brilliant birding.

Boat and canoe excursions on the Zambezi River will be possible to enable access to the aquatic aspects of the wildlife in the area.

Ruckomechi is situated on the western boundary of the Mana Pools National Park. It is situated in a large grove of Acacia and Mahogany trees overlooking the Zambezi River with a superb view of the mountains of Africa’s Great Rift Valley. The camp sleeps a maximum of 20 guests in 10 thatched chalets. Facilities are en-suite and include a shower, toilet and basin. There is one honeymoon suite overlooking the Zambezi River.  One of the camp’s better used facilities is an outside “bath with a view”. The central dining, pub and lounge area is under cool thatch, on the river’s edge, facing the escarpment.

The predators including Lion, Wild Dog, Leopard, and Cheetah, are often sighted, and large concentrations of Buffalo can be found along the river’s edges. Kudu, Zebra, Impala and Waterbuck can be seen on the surrounding plains, and Elephant take advantage of the plentiful Albida trees in the area. Bird watching tends to be good, with the river attracting large numbers of waterfowl.
