Expedition Type:
Extremely exciting Wildlife
Expedition in Southern Africa for multi-discipline scientists and students.
This expedition opens to wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists too.
What's special of this expedition?
This 7- day safari will be led by one of the wildlife biologists from the "Wild Dog Research Camp" which was featured prominently in the May 1999 National Geographic article on Wild Dogs. A field study program has been on the go in the Okavango for close on ten years.
We
travel to Chitabe and Mombo, two of the best areas for wild dog sightings and we
will be traveling in early July when the newly born pups should start to appear
outside of their dens for the first time.
The
Expedition Operator:

time as Nelson Mandela became the President of the newly elected Democratic Republic of South Africa.
Taga Safaris is run by wildlife enthusiasts and its safaris have been very
successful. The company has been a member of SATSA (South African Tourism Services
Association) the governing body for tourism.
Itinerary:
| Day 1 - Day 3 | Arrival at Maun Airport. Transfer to Chitabe Camp. |
Upon
arrival, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by
light aircraft to the Chitabe airstrip followed by a road transfer from
the airstrip to Chitabe Camp where accommodation has been reserved for
three nights. |
| CHITABE
CAMP
Activities consist of day and night game drives in open 4x4 vehicles accompanied by an experienced guide. Shorter nature walks are sometimes offered. Night drives can be very rewarding with good sightings of the rarer nocturnal animals. Access into this area is only by aircraft. |
Chitabe
is a luxurious 16 bedded, tented camp built on one of the most
beautiful islands in the Okavango Delta, in a private area that is
bordered on three sides by the Moremi Game Reserve.
The area is surrounded by waterways and lagoons that harbours a
wonderful variety of wildlife.
Accommodation consists of eight spacious East African style tents
that are built on elevated wooden decks, beneath the lush tree canopy.
Each tented room has en-suite facilities with flush toilets, and a
shower and basin with hot and cold running water.
The thatched dining area, lounge and pub are also raised on decks
overlooking the surrounding flood plains.
A pool allows guests to cool off from the heat of the day. Game
viewing is good, and includes Buffalo, Elephant, Lion, Leopard, Reedbuck,
Lechwe, Impala, Zebra and Hippo.
Wild dogs are also sometimes sighted. |

transfer from the airstrip to Mombo Camp where accommodation has been
reserved for three nights. |
|
| MOMBO
CAMP
Activities at Mombo include morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers. The game viewing in the area is excellent, and guests could see Lion, Leopard, large herds of Buffalo, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Elephant, Hyena, Giraffe, Wildebeest and Zebra. Access into this area is only by aircraft. |
Mombo
Camp and Little Mombo
are situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief’s
Island, and are within the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. The
camp offers abundant big game, arguably the best in Botswana. The highlight
here is the concentrations of plains game and all the predators –
including the big cats! Leopard sightings are particularly good. Mombo Camp
and Little Mombo have been completely rebuilt and the new camps opened in
June 2000 on a new site 800m away from the old site. Mombo is built under
the shade of some large shady trees and overlooks a wonderful floodplain
that teems with game. Both camps jointly accommodate a total of 24 guests,
but they are divided into two smaller camps – a 6 bedded and an 18 bedded. Both
camps are raised off the ground. The guest’s rooms and the walkways that
connect the rooms to the living areas are up to 2m off the ground, allowing
game to wander freely through the camp – but at the same time allowing for
guest safety. Facilities at Mombo Camp and Little Mombo include 9 and 3
large guest rooms respectively. These are superbly furnished, large luxury
tents. All rooms are built in the same style.
The canvas rooms are spacious and well appointed and have en-suite
facilities under canvas and an additional outdoor shower for those who enjoy
a shower under the stars. The dining room, pub and living area overlook the
open plain in front of the camp and there is a plunge pool for relaxing in
the heat of the day. |
