What's special of this expedition?

Your specialist guide, Lex Hes is a legend around Southern Africa with a track record of superlative safaris to his credit.

In 1976 he joined Londolozi, working as a guide and a movie cameraman. During this time he accumulated enough material for his highly acclaimed book - “The Leopards of Londolozi”.

Lex has traveled extensively throughout Africa and has made study trips to the Sub-Antarctic islands. He now lives to the West of the Kruger National Park and spends his time photographing wildlife, writing wildlife orientated books and leading safaris. His latest book “The Complete Book of Southern Africa Mammals” is superb and is destined to become the benchmark book on mammals in the region.

This 6-day safari travels to only two camps - Duma Tau and Mombo in Northern Botswana at a time of year when there will be a very short mat of bright green grass to enhance the photographs. We will focus our lenses on the incredible variety of wildlife and flora of the Okavango and the Linyanti regions. Lex will lecture participants in the field, in hides and in camp on all the knows about photography - both the theoretical and practical aspects.

Lex’s emphasis will be on “in the field” experience and instruction during actual shooting situations. As much time as possible will be spent in the field. Aspects covered during this workshop will include “equipment and film”, “composition”, “exposure”, “understanding animal behaviour” and “the components of a good wildlife photo”.

Whilst we shall always be looking for photographs of “big game”, time will also be spent looking for other nature photographs such as insects, flowers, scenery etc. should guests want to do so.

The workshop will be an intense experience and participants will be able to go away with new and wonderful techniques to ensure that they take better photographs. Guests with more time on their hands can then extend to other camps to practise their new skills.

Itinerary:

Day 1  - Day 2 Arrival at Maun Airport. Transfer to Duma Tau Camp

Upon arrival, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by light aircraft to the Duma Tau airstrip followed by a 35-minute road transfer from the airstrip to Duma Tau Camp where accommodation has been reserved for two nights.

 DUMA TAU CAMP

The area is famous for its Elephant. Huge herds congregate in winter along the waterways and lagoons.  The region has all the habitat diversity to make it a haven for wildlife.

Activities are diverse and allow guests time on the water, on land and on foot.  Day and night game drives are conducted in open 4x4 vehicles along the Savuti Channel and the banks of Linyanti River.

There are many hides in the area where guests can enjoy wildlife viewing away from a vehicle. One of the best is right at the source of the Savuti and many species of game and bird life can usually be enjoyed from this hide.

Duma Tau is a nine roomed luxury tented camp, in a private 125 000 hectare Linyanti Wildlife Reserve which borders onto the western boundary of Chobe National Park in northern Botswana.  The camp is built under a shady grove of mangosteen trees, overlooking a large hippo-filled lagoon within the Linyanti waterway system. The source of the Savuti Channel is close to the camp and gave drives up the Savuti is one of the highlights of the area. The rooms are raised off the ground and are under thatch with canvas walls, allowing guests to enjoy the night sounds of Africa from the comfort of their beds. The bathroom facilities are en-suite and each room has an additional outside shower. There is a dining room, pub, lounge, plunge pool and a guest toilet with a fantastic view.

Day 4 - Day 6 After the morning game activity and brunch you depart Duma Tau Camp and transfer by road to the airstrip for MOMBO CAMP .

Upon arrival at the airstrip, a Wilderness Safaris representative will meet and transfer you by light aircraft to the Mombo airstrip, followed by a 15-minute road transfer from the airstrip to Mombo Camp where accommodation has been reserved for three nights.

Mombo Camp and Little Mombo

Activities at Mombo include morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 Land Rovers. The game viewing in the area is excellent, and guests could see Lion, Leopard, large herds of Buffalo, Cheetah, Wild Dog, Elephant, Hyena, Giraffe, Wildebeest and Zebra.

Access into this area is only by aircraft.

Mombo Camp and Little Mombo are situated on Mombo Island, adjoining the northern tip of Chief’s Island, and are within the Moremi Game Reserve in northern Botswana. The camp offers abundant big game, arguably the best in Botswana. The highlight here is the concentrations of plains game and all the predators – including the big cats! Leopard sightings are particularly good. Mombo Camp and Little Mombo have been completely rebuilt and the new camps opened in June 2000 on a new site 800m away from the old site. Mombo is built under the shade of some large shady trees and overlooks a wonderful floodplain that teems with game. Both camps jointly accommodate a total of 24 guests, but they are divided into two smaller camps – a 6 bedded and an 18 bedded.

Both camps are raised off the ground. The guest’s rooms and the walkways that connect the rooms to the living areas, are up to 2m off the ground, allowing game to wander freely through the camp – but at the same time allowing for guest safety. Facilities at Mombo Camp and Little Mombo include 9 and 3 large guest rooms respectively. These are superbly furnished, large luxury tents. All rooms are built in the same style.  The canvas rooms are spacious and well appointed and have en-suite facilities under canvas and an additional outdoor shower for those who enjoy a shower under the stars. The dining room, pub and living area overlook the open plain in front of the camp and there is a plunge pool for relaxing in the heat of the day.

 Overnight at MOMBO CAMP

Inclusive of all meals, game activities, laundry and drinks

Day 7 After the morning game activity and brunch you depart Mombo Camp and transfer by road to the airstrip for Maun International Airport.
