Southern Tibet / Himalayas Range

Space view of Southern Tibet

Map of Tibet Geological Scientific Expedition 2001

You will pass through three tectonic - stratigraphic zones Z1, Z3, and Z4, and there are about 12 stops to be observed.

You will examine landscapes such as Lhasa River, Yamdok Tso Lake, Nojin Gangsang, continental glacier, and plantation surface of the Tibet Plateau besides geology.

Visiting Balkhor Choten Monastery.

Then you will travel southward from Gyangze to Kangmar along the Gyangze-Yadong road to investigate the metamorphic core complex in the northern Tethys Himalaya.

After lunch (picnic), you will going northeast about 10 km, to see the olistoliths in Maastrichtian, and the red bed, the Chuangde Formation in Campanian, Late Cretaceous.

Geological stops through two tectonic zones are arranged. In the morning, geology of Yarlung Zangbo suture zone is related in four stops.

Two stops in the Xigaze Forearc basin along the Yalung Tsangpu River in the afternoon.

In the morning, you have one stop to observe.

Then you will across the Castle Ridge to the Monastery Ridge, and decent to the Tashi Lhunpo Monastery. For those interested in the western end exposure of the Monastery Ridge, we will guide you there in the afternoon. For not, they have afternoon free.

Visiting two tectonic  stratigraphic zones. Four stops in the Xigaze Forearc Zone (Z2), five stops in the Yarlung Zangbo Suture Zone (Z3).

On the way, we will pass by the Younongla Pass, over 5000 m in elevation.

It could be a hard day, although only two geological stops in the northern Tibetan Tethys Himalaya Zone (Z4).

It will be difficult to ride on the road at the southern slope of Gyatsola Pass, which are over 5000 m in elevation. You can  check the Cretaceous and Jurassic dark-gray and black shale if you are lucky and reach Tingri in the early afternoon.

You will start from the Qomolangma Hotel in the early morning, arrive to the Longpu Temple in the afternoon, and return to Tingri about the midnight.

Three stops to check the two tectonic zones Z6 and Z5 on the route.

(You may remain at Longpu Temple for one or two more days when cloud or frog covers the Mt. Everest at that time.)

This will be a long day. Many stops are arranged.

The successive marine Phanerozoic (stratigraphy sequences and boundaries) in the southern Tethys Himalayas (Z5), deformation and metamorphism of the crystalline rocks in the High Himalayas (Z6) will be observed.

Along the way, you will enjoy the scenery of Himalaya Mountains, and the Xixabangma Peak.
